Your County VSO Is the Single Best Resource You’re Not Using

Every Ohio county has a free Veterans Service Office. They file claims, cut emergency assistance checks, and help with transportation. Here’s what they actually do.
Most veterans in Ohio have no idea that their County VSO exists, or assume it is a small DMV-style office that stamps forms. The reality is that your local VSO is one of the most capable, best-funded veteran services offices in the country — and it is entirely funded by your county.
What they can do for you
A County VSO can:
- File your VA disability claim and appeals (free, VA-accredited)
- Cut an emergency financial assistance check for rent, utilities, food, or car repair
- Provide free transportation to VA medical appointments
- Help with burial benefits, grave markers, and military honors at funerals
- Assist with education benefit applications
The emergency financial assistance alone is a lifeline most veterans never hear about. If you fall behind on rent, lose your car, or are facing an unexpected medical bill, your County VSO can often cut a check that week — no loan, no repayment.
